BAKO WESTERN TRADE DAY 2019… and the winner is?

On Sunday 13th October the California Walnut Commission (CWC) attended the popular BAKO Western trade day in Cullompton, Devon to promote California Walnuts to the bakery trade.

The event brought together over 500 suppliers and key buyers. Visitors to CWC’s booth were invited to sample a selection of products containing California Walnuts, such as the Lemon & California Walnut Drizzle cake.

BAKO is one of the largest ingredient suppliers to the UK baking and food-to-go industry. The annual BAKO Western trade event aims to facilitate trade in and around the West Country and offer seasonal price incentives. Within the range BAKO supplies California Walnuts – as halves, pieces and nibbed.

Nick Richardson from The Garden Marketing & PR, the trade representative for California Walnuts in the UK, commented:
“California Walnuts partnered with the Western Region Craft Bakers Association Bakery Championships 2019 supporting the new competition category, California Walnut, Cheese & Olive Bread (Class number 17). Contestants were invited to produce their best CA Walnut, Cheese and Olive Bread, weighing in at 600g.
Well done to all those that entered and congratulations to those who placed 1st to 4th.”

Judging took place by the Western Region CBA during the annual open day and the winner of the California Walnuts supported bread category was Bridgewater based Somerset Bakehouse.

Results of the California Walnut, Cheese & Olive Bread baking competition were as follows:

2nd Lee Smith, Poppyseed Bakery, Bexhill
3rd Peter Ellis, Belinda’s Bakery, Ringwood
4th The Italian Bakery Ltd, Wareham
